Mortgage Relief For Underwater Mortgage Debt – Do You Qualify?

By Jim Stevenson

Are you looking for home mortgage relief from underwater mortgage debt?

Well, you’re not alone. Today many people find themselves in a position where they would like to stay in their home but they can’t afford their current mortgage payments.

What Can You Do? What Are Your Options?

The federal government has a plan to provide underwater mortgage refinance for you. You could apply for the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) under the Obama Administration’s Making Home Affordable Program.

But … The Question Is “Do You Qualify?”

You must meet these basic criteria to be able to apply for mortgage relief.

  1. You must be the home owner living in the home.
  2. Your loan must be owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.
  3. You must be current in your mortgage payments.

Meeting criterion number 1 should be easy if you are currently living in your home. You may have to do a little research to see whether you meet criterion number 2. But you’ll probably qualify there too.

But What If You Are Not Current In Your Mortgage Payments?

If you’ve missed any payments in the last 12 months or have been more than 30 days late, then you’re not current. Then you won’t qualify.

So, you can’t apply for federal government home mortgage relief.
